WELCOME
The Moses Kotane institute was established in January 2009, with the
aim of making a contribution to addressing the shortfalls in
performance in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics, (STEM) in
our province.
The Institute is implementing a diverse range of programmes to target
the key drivers underpinning performance in STEM, including educators,
learners and government.
Recent and current projects are the Ubuntu conference and the MKI High School and University bursaries, which we are very proud of. Please click the links below for the latest MKI News.

Ubuntu Conference 2009
The Moses Kotane Institute held the inaugural Ubuntu Conference on the
7th and 8th of December. The conference was a great success, and we
look forward to providing you with a portal to the research which the
conference generates.
An exciting development in these
early days of the Moses Kotane Insitute, is that we now provide both
the text of the abstracts, and speeches, and the AUDIO, which allows
you to enjoy the great speakers and their wize words.

The History of Moses Kotane Institute
The Moses Kotane Institute held its inaugural workshop on the 15th April 2009 at the Westville Hotel, KwaZulu-Natal(KZN), from 8am until 5 pm, to share information and to commence an ‘orchestration’ function whereby those involoved in multiple interventions in KZN talk to each other and thereby ensure optimal resource utilization.
Professor Thembinkosi Modi, the CEO of the Moses Kotane Institute, described his vision for the Institute to be ‘the trusted knowledge leaders that orchestrate innovative STEM interventions that render efficient and sustainable service delivery…”
At this workshop, stakeholders had the privilege of sharing information through formal presentations by national and provincial experts in their field.
The Chairman of Umalusi, Prof John Volmink, challenged the delegates to consider what importance should be placed on the NCS Grade 12 maths results from last year, providing insight into the trends in learner pass rates over a decade, and the impact of different curricula.
Dikshita Padalkar from Research Resources reminded the delegates why the Moses Kotane Institute was appropriately established by the KZN Department of Economic Development …” Economic development is the result of the generation of wealth through innovation and knowledge value add…. Maths, Science and Technology underpin innovation, and are therefore key drivers of economic development in our province “ she explained.
Interventions from the MerSeta were covered by AZWI TSHISIKAMULILO, whilst innovative new technological solutions were covered by Anne Meyer from George Campbell School and KG Pillay from Academic Technologies. The proposed use of “smartboards’ and mobile technology as solutions that could address teacher shortages in maths and science, and rural access, were well received by the delegates. Other presentations included:
SCIENTEC: Science Education Technology BUBBA NAIDOO
NIIT: BPO & Software Engineering RAKESH MINSRI
AMESA: Teacher Development Programme VISHNU NAIDOO
Dr Gert Kruger, Scientific Editor SA J. Chem., (Org. Chem.) commented “ I think it is the right time for the start of such an institute and it would be likely that it will play a national role, especially in terms of getting the training of new science and maths teachers to acceptable levels…... To summarise, I think you guys are taking up a very crucial and noble (albeit difficult!) task. However, to be in a position to plan for a better future is extremely exciting in my view.’
