Programme 1: Abet School

Outline of Programme 1: Secondary Abet School Maths And Science (SASMAS)

This programme is not intended to replace or compete with the present Secondary FET Maths and Science programme of the Department of Education but to supplement it with a special programme for secondary school. The Thekwini FET College already has such a programme in place. Programme one is offered in close conjunction with the college’s existing Maths and Science programme but will incorporate courses on Career Guidance, Science and Technology in Society and the History of the Struggle. The course has to satisfy the accreditation requirements of SAQA, and adheres to the requirements of 2 language subjects. The courses offered in this programme are outcomes based, in keeping with the offerings of Thekwini College. Educators for this programme are supplied from Thekwini FET College and are remunerated from the budget of the MKI. The subjects currently offered in this programme are:

  • English: Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Afrikaans or Zulu (1st additional language): Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Life Orientation: Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Maths: Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Physics: Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Life Science: Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Technical Drawing/ Engineering Design: Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Computer Literacy: Grade 10, 11 and 12

Enrichment programmes to be developed include:

  • History of SA Liberation Struggle (non-exam; special certificate)
  • Career Guidance (Combination of theory and field trips) (non-exam)
  • Science and Technology in Society (non-exam; special certificate)

This programme commenced at the beginning of 2009 with a first batch of 20 students, enrolled in 2009 and due to complete in 2011.

Key performance indicators relating to the enrichment programme :

  • Participating in Maths Olympiad and Maths Amesa examinations.
  • Using computer software programmes in addition to the required text to enhance learning.
  • Visits to engineering companies to obtain first hand information on the application of Engineering Graphics & Design.
  • Use CAD programme in the teaching of the subject.
  • Invite architects to present insight into the subject.
    • Set up a debating club and organize debates with neighboring schools.
    • Encourage pupils to write to the media on current issues.
    • Involve pupils in the production of plays.
  • Take pupils on leadership course which encompases team building exercises.
  • Engage pupils in first-aid training and certify them as first aiders.
  • Motivate pupils to participate in plays & speech competitions.
  • Engage pupils to form a literacy club & involve pupils in the publication of a student newsletter.
  • Provision of enrichment booklets on language study & creative writing.
  • Subscribing to daily newspapers and magazines.
  • Undertake field trips to give pupils first hand knowledge of environmental issues.
  • Use of the Internet to check and gather information on current developments in Science & Technology
  • Fully functional laboratory with all experiments conducted practically.
  • Printing additional notes & worksheet for learners
  • Holding a science day, displaying the learner’s projects done during the year
  • Use of audio visual aids (TV, Videos and DVD) to enhance learning skills.
