Programme 3: Science Educators
Outline of Programme 3: Advancement of Science and Technology for Educators (ASTE)
This programme is aimed at improving the teaching skills of STEM teachers at senior secondary level. It is geared towards current science and technology educators. Modern and recent teaching methods and resources will be introduced to educators through a series of workshops and lectures, on a part-time basis over a period of six months. The programme will start in 2009, enrolling 60 students per year until 2012 The aim is not to duplicate teaching methods that educators would have encountered in their normal teacher training but to supplement that with advanced teaching and learning methods.Courses to be offered in this programme are:
- Use of Multimedia for teaching and learning of Science & Technology
- Use of ICT for teaching and learning of Science and Technology
- Computer Literacy
- Introduction to scarce skills professions (Basic modules)
- History of SA Liberation Struggle (non-exam; special certificate)
- Career Guidance (Combination of theory and Field trips) (non-exam)
- Science and Technology in Society (non-exam; special certificate)
Accreditation: The pilot for this programme has been outsourced to Scientec.
