Call For Bursary Applicants
In November 2009 the Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) made a public call to all KwaZulu-Natal Grade 9 learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to apply for 100 Grade 10 bursaries for 2010. Some 400 applications were received from all corners of the province. About 320 of the applicants qualified for the bursary by virtue of their academic results (at least 50% in all subjects, including Math, Science and English), and they were invited to write an entrance examination.
On the 17th of December 2009, more than 250 pupils descended on Burnwood Secondary School to try and secure one of the 100 Grade 10 MKI bursaries. The bursary will ensure that the one hundred chosen students have their full tuition, for Grades 10, 11 and 12, respectively for the next three years at Burnwood Secondary School. The bursary also provides for school uniforms, accommodation and meals at St. Michael's boarding establishment from 2010 to 2012.

On the 17th of December 2009 the students wrote three papers - Math,
Science and English. There were a lot of nervous little faces before
the aptitude tests, especially after hearing that they couldn't use
calculators for the Math test.

Nervous Support
There were also many nervous adult faces in the crowd during the day as parents waited with anticipation for their children to emerge from the test venue. The results, along with the income of the family of a learner, will be analyzed and the chosen 100 will be notified on or before the 23rd December 2009.
One of the highlights of the day was the message from the CEO of MKI, Prof Modi, who said to the learners, “ Today you have come to be part of a revolution to change the poor communities of KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa into places characterized by economic development underpinned by local skills and Ubuntu” , The CEO worked with his staff members, Dumisile Mtshali and Amanda Burdett, as well as the principal of Burnwood School, Mr. Gokal and 22 of his educators, to ensure that the tests were run in a orderly and well structured manner. The students were monitored at all times during the day and the test papers were not only marked twice but moderated so as to ensure there were no errors.
Professor Modi, helped serve the learners and their parent’s
food, and complimented the Burnwood team in his speech after the tests.

Personal Thanks to Burnwood Team
Professor Modi wishes to thank the Burnwood team for the professional and friendly way they handled the
students.
They truly proved today why exactly the Moses Kotane Institute is so confident that the MKI students will achieve great things by studying, under the care of the Moses Kotane Institute, at Burnwood Secondary School. He assured the learners that selection of the 100 successful applicants will be done fairly and scientifically, considering a number of factors, including academic merit, family income, and representation of all the provincial districts as much as possible. He congratulated the successful applicants in advance and encouraged all the learners and parents to accept the outcome of process.

Citing words from one of his favorite songs, he said “Baba uma
ngilahleka kuloluhambo lwalelizwe, hlal’ungifundis’ukuthi
mayenzek’intando yakho”. The words simply translated mean, we must
always trust that God will guide us and decide our ways.
