Moses Kotane Institute University Bursaries

By Yvette Chetty, Access Faculty Office

The Moses Kotane Institute is proudly sponsoring 200 bursaries for students accepted onto one of the programmes in the Centre for Science Access (CSA) at the unversity on KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg and Westville Campuses) for 2010.

These programmes provide access into a science or science related degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for students from a disadvantaged background who do not meet the minimum entry requirements to go directly into a science degree (B.Sc.).

The CSA offers 3 access programmes for those interested in a science degree: BSc4 Augmented degree, BSc4 Foundation degree and the Science Foundation Programme.

The BSc4 Augmented degree has been operating since 1991 on the Durban campus and Pietermaritzburg campus from 2007 whilst the BSc4 Foundation has been in existence on the Pietermaritzburg campus since 1991 and on the Westville campus since 1999. These are therefore some of the most established programmes in the country, with a proud history and an excellent track record of producing science graduates.

These programmes provide access into a science or science-related degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for students from a disadvantaged school who do not meet the minimum entry requirements to go directly into a science degree (B.Sc.). Therefore one would need to apply to the BSc4 Augmented or BSc4 Foundation if you have an NSC Degree/exemption or to the Science Foundation Programme if you don’t have an NSC degree/exemption. When a student is admitted into the BSc4 Augmented or BSc4 Foundation he or she is registered for a BSc degree. BSc4 students who do very well in their first year may continue with qualifications in Science or may transfer to degrees such as Engineering, Medicine or Health Sciences if you meet the necessary requirements. Students registered for the Science Foundation Programme may register for the first year of a science degree after successfully completing the programme.

The Top 200 applicants selected into the Csa will each recieve a full bursary from the Moses Kotane Insitute.
