On 18 December 2019, the Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) Acting Chief Executive Officer, Doctor Simphiwe Buthelezi, addressing the delegates Kwa Nongoma Local Municipality, outlined the mandate of MKI under the three pillars: Research, Innovation & Maritime. She mentioned that Research is aimed at finding ways to improve the economy of KwaZulu-Natal, inclusive of rural and township economy. She then touched on MKI research study findings such as Commercialisation of Cannabis to benefit KwaZulu- Natal Cannabis prospective businesses. Innovation: she stated that it is aimed at aligning the province and the country with the rapidly growing technological skills in line with the 4IR. She further touched on the projects currently being rolled out by MKI such as Information, Communication Technology Hubs. On Maritime she spoke about opportunities such as diving, boat building, some of which do not even require matriculation.
