The research and development programme provide support in an interdisciplinary and applied approach towards research and skills development interventions for the province. We enhance the knowledge economy through relevant research.
This programme is aimed at conducting relevant research and make recommendations on policy and interventions, develop a cohort of highly skilled youth through our postgraduate bursaries and capacity building programmes (internship and experiential learning interventions), contribute towards the Cannabis industry development and enterprise development for small and medium businesses on the identified strategic sectors.The innovation and technology programme provide support in an interdisciplinary and applied approach towards innovation and technology interventions for the province. This deals with the process of translating ideas or inventions into a goods or services that creates value for the society. MKI plays a coordinating role and encourages innovators to be entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs to be innovators. This is done through establishing enabling platforms such as digital centres, innovation competitions and awards, digital skills coordination, innovation dialogues and lecture series and innovation and technology summits etc. We strongly promote strategic integration of emerging technologies and advise on effective integration of the ICT into government systems.This programme is aimed at maximising the level of policy-relevant knowledge to support the KwaZulu-Natal Integrated Maritime Strategy and Operation Phakisa. We do this through research and advisory to government and entrepreneurs. We use our knowledge, expertise and resources towards maritime policy, strategy and programme development. Our range of services include enterprise development, awareness, outreach and skills development. Further to maritime, we provide economic related information to government based on research, and constantly seek new economic opportunities for the province.
