Applications are invited for the position of the Research Ethics Committee Members based at La Mercy. The successful applicants will be reporting to the Head of Research
Background: The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is an Entity of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government through the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA). Our mandate is to conduct world class research into skills development, and provincial strategic economic sectors; and to strategically lead in innovation and maritime co-ordination and implementation activities to respond to the needs of the provincial economy. The Institution is looking for experienced and suitably qualified South African citizens to fulfil this responsibility. Preference will be given to applicants residing in Kwa Zulu Natal.
Purpose of the job: Through it’s Research and Development Unit the MKI seeks to conduct world class research. To this end it is critical that superior standards of research processes are maintained. The MKI Research Ethics Committee will be responsible for reviewing proposals and terms of references (TOR’s) that will address research ethical matters.
Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have a completed a PhD in Science/ Social Science/ Public Policy/ IT and other related fields. Five (5) years’ experience in conducting and reviewing research. Five (5) years’ experience in research ethics. Must have an impressive publication record (minimum of 5 peer reviewed journal articles). A Valid driver’s license & own transport.
Remuneration: DPSA Level 13 (1)
Duration: 24 months contract
Core competencies: Excellent writing and communication skills. General professionalism in all areas.
Responsibilities: The Moses Kotane Research Ethics Committee (REC) will be responsible for the following:
- Ensure that the rights of research participants are always protected;
- Ensure that the proposals are treated with respect and confidentiality;
- Conduct a thorough review of the research Terms of References (ToRs; Conduct ethics review in a wholly independent and impartial manner without any conflicts of interest and with a focus clearly on the ethics of research proposals;
- Where the REC feels that it does not have the expertise to review a proposal, it should seek the help of independent bodies or external members. RECs should ensure that they fulfil their role and responsibilities with integrity and record their decisions and feedback in a transparent manner.
